Background to IDC 2007

IDC 2007 is being organised by members of the Information Design Association in the UK.

About the IDA

The idea of setting up the IDA came out of the original Information Design Conference series, organized by the Information Design Journal during the 1980s. In 1990, a group of design practitioners, teachers and researchers thought it would be good to form an Association, both as a talking-shop and to promote the benefits of Information Design to a wider audience.

For some years the IDA held well-attended meetings in London, and also got involved in running the Information Design Conferences; then, energies waned, and the IDA became dormant in the UK. Until a year ago!

A group of us have come together, using the IDA as our organisational framework, to run this conference. We are already delighted with the international interest that has been shown in this event, and following the conference the IDA will continue with regular meetings.

The conferences

For two and a half decades, the Information Design conferences have fruitfully brought together designers, users and owners of information, as well as researchers and teachers in the field. The most recent events were held in collaboration with the Information Design Network, an alliance of higher education institutions in the UK where information design and technical communication are taught:

  • InfoDesign 97, 14–15 July 1997, Cambridge
  • InfoDesign 98, 20–21 April 1998, Cambridge
  • InfoDesign 2000, 10–11 July 2000, Coventry
